Rethinking the Kitchen

In order to break down the partitioned and cut-off main living areas of the existing house, walls were reconfigured with large openings puncturing through to adjacent rooms. The walls were made deep enough to carve out useful recessed niches, some holding kitchen equipment, or spanned across with a serving counter and seating, some displaying artwork, and several acting as passageways to other spaces. Direct connection to the new pantry space makes everyday use easier to navigate. Elsewhere a powder room was redesigned to fit the overall style of the house in its new form.

Interior Designer Kathy Smith of Belmont, NC completed the design with a unique blend of antique and new items that work together to create an eclectic and romantic space.
